Art Licensing Trade Shows

Art Licensing shows or in most cases trade shows that include a section devoted to art licensing requires that you have legitimate credentials (buyer, press, exhibitor, etc) to attend. Some will allow artists/designers to attend but may require a fee. Which one you want to visit or exhibit is dependent on what type of manufacturers you are targeting your art. Exhibiting at these shows are expensive and a 10 by 10 foot booth can cost up to $4500. Exhibiting at the CHA winter show is the least expensive. Below is a list of the shows.

1. Surtex held in conjunction with the National Stationery Show(Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York City) held in May. The emphasize of this show is to sell and license art for products. It is a well established show that is attended by manufacturers in the gift and stationery industry. It is considered by many artists the best show to exhibit your art. May 16-18, 2010 (http://www.surtex.com)

2. Art & Design Section at the Licensing International Expo (Las Vegas, Nevada) held in June. This shows main emphasize is on character and brands. Artists and agents exhibit at this show to connect with manufacturers outside the main stream gift industry. Although there is an overlap and some giftware manufacturers attend both this show and others. June 8-10, 2010 (http://www.licensingexpo.com/)

3. License and Design section at the Winter CHA show (Craft & Hobby Association show in Anaheim, CA) held in January. You must belong to CHA in order to exhibit. This shows main emphasize is on the craft industry. Scrapbooking is a large component of crafts so that some artists having pattern and icon art do well at this show. January 24-27, 2010 (https://www.chashow.org)

4. License & Design Collection section during the Atlanta International Gift Show; Home Furnishings Market (Atlanta Georgia) held in January. The licensing section was established for the first time in 2009. Because it is held during the largest Gift Show in the US, there is a big potential in connecting with many manufacturers in the gift industry. January 8-10, 2010. 5. Licensing section at the Print Source New York show (New York) held in January. The licensing section was established for the first time in 2009. The main emphasize of the show is to sell textual and surface designs. Update 2012: This show no longer has a licensing exhibitor section.

6. New York International Gift Fair is held in late January.  The Licensing Gallery is a small area of 32 booths that was established to give some of those exhibiting at the May Surtex show the opportunity to exhibit at an earlier show.  January 29-31, 2011 at the Javits Center.  Update 2012: This show no longer has a licensing exhibitor section.

  2. there is another side to the licensing shows.
Exhibiting during the National Stationery Show 2010
with my new merchandise(PATENT PENDING) I collected half of business cards from people representing major corporation with big portion of them from Asia. Thinking that I am going display my stuff during traditional Trade show I was not prepared for the fact that NSS is freely allowing people visiting Surtex to attend NSS. People looking for fresh Ideas on the NSS show floor.
In fact people from nearby booths were telling me that I am under onslaught from big business looking for freebies. I asked myself what business I have to Send to some people in (for example) Sanrio Corp to send samples of my merchandise. Is obvious That I can not have patents in every country in the word. I was checking few years ago and cost of filling patents in every Country in EU would run me about $35,000. So my advise show your artwork but nothing
what is new Invention. The big people may eat you
for Breakfast. They are known stories that they file lawsuits just to prevent your lawsuit in same matter, while producing and profiting from your invention or whatever it might be.
In fact during NSS I met guy who almost openly was trying to steal my idea to use for his line of Sport related products.
So I did spend substantial amount to exhibit just to get parasites. So now I am thinking about art licensing since 3 years of new product development can so quickly go South and thinking about other ways to sell my current product.
